The most remote county in Scotland, and the furthest north point of the UK, Shetland is a collective of islands some 130 miles from the Scottish mainland. Accessible by ferry from Scrabster and Aberdeen, and air from a variety of destinations, the islands are home to a little over 20,000 inhabitants, and have strong links with Norway and Scandinavia as a result of their geographic location and history. While remote and largely rural in its economy, Shetland is nonetheless one of the most beautiful counties in the UK, with unparalleled scenery and wildlife a key attraction for tourists and residents alike.

Given its population and small geographical range, Shetland has no motorways or major trunk roads. However, it is relatively well connected, particularly on the mainland of the county – sufficient to enable residents and freight to move freely around the islands.
