The main A483 runs north to south through the county, providing direct road access to Wrexham and Chester in the north to the Brecon Beacons and ultimately Cardiff in the south, providing the main arterial route to and from the county. The A470 provides access to Cardigan Bay and the west coast through Snowdonia National Park.

With the county town of Montgomery just three miles from Shropshire, Montgomeryshire naturally benefits from strong rail connections to Shrewsbury, Hereford and Chester.
